Scaling a business is easier said than done. It has taken lots of persistence and camaraderie to scale our technology services firm as quickly and successfully as we have. After we chose which specialty we wanted to drive towards, we expanded our expert team in AI and data science. We scaled from zero to almost 700 employees since 2004 – only 17 years.
To say the least, we’ve grown rather quickly.
In this Emerj podcast, we shed light on how we grew so quickly, in a healthy and sustainable way. We share insights on how to scale talent, processes, procedures, and departments, and how we experimented with different models of businesses until we found the right fit.
The elements that have allowed us to scale abruptly and steadily include marketing and sales, the things one would expect. However, one that we feel sets us apart is our people.

We decided we needed to focus a healthy amount of our attention and resources on our recruiting and our employee’s careers. While you take the cost of acquiring customers into account, you should in tandem consider the cost of your employees – and the potential cost of replacing and re-training. - A Chief Careers Officer to assist employees on outlining their growth trajectory and career paths
- Employee Programs such as sporting events or volunteer groups in order to maintain high morale and camaraderie
- Enforcing Brand Values to emphasize that our experts are a part of Daitan, not their customers or their many projects.

We spend a lot of time and effort on ensuring the data scientists feel that they represent Daitan, rather than our clients because when you are so committed to your work, it can become a blurry line. We have created an environment where our employees can feel loyalty to our brand, and to our values. This naturally creates a sense of loyalty to our business and our work.
We don’t take shortcuts where we recruit engineers. It’s counter-productive to hire quickly to then experience turnover even more quickly. We want to hire the right people and see the results of caring for our employees. We’ve set up a structure to formalize their belonging to Daitan as a company and really try to engrain our company values with each engineer. We want to make sure our employees are happy and are on the right path for them and their goals.
